Viniyoga evolved from the teachings of Sri T. Krisnamacarya and his son T.K.V. Desikacar. Krisnamacarya is known as the "father of modern yoga" as he is responsible for bringing his teachings of yoga to the west with famous students like Pattabhi Jois who created Ashtanga Yoga, B.K.S Iyengar who created Iyengar Yoga, A.G Mohan who created Svastha Yoga & Ayurveda and Gary Kraftsow who brought Viniyoga and yoga therapy to the west.
Viniyoga is an approach to yoga that adapts the practice to the unique condition, needs and interests of each individual. This provides them with the tools to individualize and actualize the process of self-discovery and personal transformation. Viniyoga is an authentic and comprehensive transmission of the teachings of yoga including: Asana (physical postures), Pranayama (breath techniques), Chanting, Tantric Practices, Meditation, Yogic Science and Philosophy. This style of yoga teaches the student how to develop their own personal practice customized for their individual needs which can change on a daily basis.
Viniyoga equips each practitioner with the understanding between the flow of the breath and the movement of the spine. This allows us to become aware of our own dysfunctional movement patterns. We use patterns of repetition and stay into and out of postures for a couple of reasons. Repetitive or dynamic movement promotes musculoskeletal and neuromuscular transformation. Static or holding the postures allows us to stretch the deepest connective tissue and our spinal musculature, which has a direct influence on our physiological health.
Viniyoga places a strong emphasis on function over form in asana (postures). It is less about performing them perfectly and more about understanding what's happening in our body as we perform them. This allows us to use adaptations in breath and movement to produce certain desired effects. The goal is to get the maximum benefit with minimal risks.
What distinguishes Viniyoga from other yoga traditions is using asana as one of many tools to come to a deeper understanding of the self as well as to recognize a need for change and effect that change through positive transformation. The benefits of practicing Viniyoga are multi-dimensional which include gaining structural integrity in our physiology which increases vitality. Pranayama breath practices and chanting aid in regulating our autonomic nervous system which stabilizes our emotions and gives us clarity, allowing us to make better decisions and maintain balance in the constant change of our everyday lives.
